More than twenty Olympic champions, trainers and further global sports figures have signed a appeal urging a stop to the execution of a champion boxer and coach, who is on death row in the nation.

Growing Worldwide Condemnation

Amidst rising global condemnation over Iran’s expanding employment of executions as a tool of oppression, the forcefully phrased appeal denounces the government's verdict to confirm the death sentence of the athlete.

The athlete, three decades old, from the city in north-east Iran, was detained for taking part in countrywide demonstrations in the year 2019 and indicted of backing an opposition group. He has passed 60 months in detention, where he has been abused and confined in solitary confinement.

“Competition is designed to inspire faith, togetherness, and courage,” the endorsers wrote. “The capital punishment of a winner for his beliefs is a blatant attack on these values and a caution to any competitor who attempts to voice opinions.

Record of Killing Sports Figures

The letter said that the athlete's circumstances was not an isolated one and highlighted Iran’s past of sentencing to death competitors for their views, including a football captain, captain of the football side, and a women's sports leader, leader of the national women’s volleyball team. In the year 2020, a wrestling champion, a young Iranian competitor, was put to death.

Other supporters to the statement consist of a yachting pioneer, who led the inaugural all-female crew in a round-the-world competition and was the first woman to be awarded a prestigious yachting trophy; the previous captain of the soccer side an athlete; and a footballer, who was in the country's selection for the international competition.

Apprehension and Unfair Trial

Vafaei Sani was arrested in early 2020. The allegations against him comprised “spreading corruption on Earth through fire-setting and destruction of public property”. His ruling has been annulled on two occasions but on October 4 it was upheld on the latest review. His trial was criticized as “grossly unfair” by advocates and organizations.

Call to UN

The appeal to stop Vafaei Sani’s death sentence follows a 2023 appeal to the United Nations official for freedoms, endorsed by more than one hundred advocates and organizations, calling for intervention to prevent the athlete’s execution.

Capital Punishment Escalation

According to data, there is an “death penalty surge in Iran, which has reached shocking dimensions”. In two thousand twenty-three, officials sentenced at least 853 people – a 48% surge on 2022. In the prior period, records showed nearly a thousand deaths, constituting the peak figure since 2015. Over 800 people have been put to death so far in the current year.

Activists and protesters are targets, notably in the aftermath of the the year 2022 protests. Experts say the government have employed the executions to quell protest, generate apprehension among the population and reinforce their hold on rule.
